A new guide to Ysgyryd Fawr

Ysgyryd Fawr (in English The Skirrid) is the easternmost peak of the Brecon Beacons National Park. At 486 meters it is not the tallest of these mountains, but being set apart from the rest of the range it offers superb views into the Black Mountains as well as over Abergavenny and over the Welsh Marches toward Herefordshire and the Bristol Channel.

As he says it is " an ideal place for the committed coast-hugger and is one my favourite places on the Pembrokeshire coast.". Many thanks to John Williamson for contributing our latest two Pembrokeshire guides, Manorbier and the nearby Presipe beach. John's local knowledge really pays dividends here, he has a really intimate knowledge of these places which are invaluable to the landscape photographer. From the popular Manorbier with it's castle, car park and ice cream van, he takes us to the holy grail we're all looking for a deserted beach at Presipe (well it was!!)

Whitesands Bay and Carn Llidi

Whitesands Bay is a wide sandy beach about two miles from Britain's smallest city St. David's and is overlooked by an impressively shaped rocky hill known as Carn Llidi. Together they make a wonderful location to photograph, full of possibilities for composition and light at all times of the day or year. Well that's why I thought you'd all appreciate a guide to this wonderful location, a landscape full of mystery and magic.

Blaenau Ffestiniog

Blaenau Ffestiniog, once a major centre of the slate mining industry, is set in an elevated natural bowl between the Manod and Moelwyn Mountains of Snowdonia. The entire landscape is dominated by slate, the slate waste tips and remnants of the slate industry that shaped the area. The village is the starting point for many walks up into the Moelwyns. There are stunning views over the Vale of Ffestiniog, harsh slate landscapes, rivers and bridges to be found.

Pen Y Fan

Cwmystradllyn, Snowdonia National Park.

Cwmystradllyn lies nestled at the edge of Snowdonia national park. At the heart of an old mining community, the remains of the old quarry can be seen from the end of the lake, and the nearby ruin of Ynysypandy slate mill which used to draw on the river Henwy from Llyn Cwmystradllyn for power.

Upper Neuadd Reservoir

I have just completed my second location guide - to the Upper Neuadd Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons. This fantastic and remote location has many charms including great views of the main ridge of the mountains, an island which is sometimes accessible on foot during dry spells and a 19th Century dam with a castellated stone tower.

In a slight twist I have also created a knol out of some creative writing this location inspired. You can see that here - Solitude Thickens with the Night.

Which one you may all be asking! Yes there are lots of places that start with Aber in Wales, meaning as it does a river mouth, but this one although known as Aber is also a shortened version of Abergwyngregyn. This is a location that has almost every conceivable landscape location - coast, mountains and waterfalls. Nestled between the sea and mountains between Bangor and Llanfairfechan this is definitely one to check out!

Second Severn Crossing Guide

Speaking as someone who spent over three years commuting across this bridge and who was frequently frustrated by not being able to stop and catch the light, I'm delighted to see all this information.

If you're a keen landscape photographer searching for new and exciting locations - this is the place for you. The Wales site is only part of what will become a worldwide resource for photographers. The UK site is now up and running - word is spreading like wildfire! Australia has been developing at a breathless pace, new additions almost daily and I'm sure us pommies aren't going to allow them to do a better one than us!
